Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin
A medical school and university medical center in one, Charité enjoys an outstanding reputation worldwide, combining first-class patient care with excellence in research and innovation, state-of-the-art teaching, and high-quality training and education. More than half of the German Nobel Prize winners for medicine and physiology came from Charité, including Emil von Behring, Robert Koch and Paul Ehrlich.
Everything Charité does revolves around people and their health. Charité pursues translational research in which scientific findings are applied to prevention, diagnostics, and treatment and clinical observations inform new approaches in research in turn. At Charité, the goal is to actively help shape the medicine of the future to benefit patients
Charité offers excellent conditions for young researchers hoping to enter a career in academia. These include outstanding research and work environments, as well as a comprehensive program of courses aimed at doctoral students. You can complete your doctoral studies by either opting for a traditional doctorate (which is equivalent to a PhD) or by choosing a 'structured doctoral program' (access to which is dependent on your aptitude and how suited you are for the subject area as well as your successful completion of the selection process).
Charité currently offers five structured doctoral programs. Aimed at outstanding young researchers, these are centered around a specific research area or topic, and offer a detailed program of study, as well as close support and supervision:
- Health Data Sciences
- Integrative Oncology
- Medical Neurosciences
- Regenerative Therapies
- Global Health
You can also do your doctorate at the Charité as part of a Graduiertenkolleg (Research Training Group). These Research Training Groups are university institutions for the promotion of early career researchers, which are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
