CRC 1772 Heterostructures of Molecules & 2D Materials (mol2Dmat)

The CRC 1772 - mol2Dmat investigates novel collective states and quantum phenomena arising from heterostructures of molecules and two-dimensional materials. Our interdisciplinary consortium brings together 20 research groups from Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg. Our goal is to push the boundaries of quantum materials research at the interface of physics, chemistry and materials science.

Focus

The Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG) is dedicated to supporting the next generation of researchers—PhD students and postdocs—by combining hands-on research with structured training and professional development.

Beyond contributing to scientific discoveries, our goal is to equip early-career researchers with the skills they need for successful careers in academia, industry, or beyond. This includes training in critical thinking, communication, teamwork, project management, and leadership.

The iRTG offers a comprehensive program of mentoring, workshops, and courses designed to build both scientific expertise and transferable skills such as data management, intellectual property, and good scientific practice. It also encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration and provides a strong support network within the CRC.

Creating an inclusive, supportive environment that values diversity, well-being, and mental health is a central part of our mission.

The IRTG is a member of Doctoral Program Natural Sciences (Freie Universität Berlin).
