The DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center CRC 1772 – mol2Dmat was established in October 2025 and together we investigate novel collective states and quantum phenomena arising from heterostructures of molecules and two-dimensional materials. Our interdisciplinary consortium brings together physicists and chemists from Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin.  

Within mol2Dmat, researchers work across 18 scientific projects, closely integrating theory and experimentation, synthesis and characterization, and fundamental science with application-oriented objectives. Our goal is to push the boundaries of quantum materials research at the interface of physics, chemistry and materials science.

The CRC1772 includes an Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG) that provides doctoral candidates with a structured training program complementing the research training carried out in the individual research groups. 

Our iRTG is dedicated to supporting early career researchers by combining hands-on research with structured training and professional development.

We provide training in cross-disciplinary scientific skills relevant to the interdisciplinary nature of the CRC to build their scientific expertise. This will be complemented by mentoring and training in a range of transferable skills to support our researchers in their professional development and equip them for future careers in academia, industry, or beyond. 

In addition, we will facilitate networking and team building among our researchers and foster an inclusive, supportive and collaborative environment within the CRC. 

The IRTG is a member of Doctoral Program Natural Sciences (Freie Universität Berlin).
