Global and Area Studies PhD Program
The Global and Area Studies is a joint venture doctoral program comprising several institutions worldwide. These include Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), Jawaharlal Nehru University (India), FLACSO (Argentina), Università di Bologna (Italy) and Universidade Federal Fluminense (Brazil). Doctoral candidates are expected to spend at least one year at each of the two institutions where their respective supervisors are located, with the opportunity to spend some time at a third institution for fieldwork and additional experience.
Focus
The program focuses on various topics concerning Twenty-First Century Globalization and Alternative Futures. These include: migration, sustainability, inequality, governance and alternative futures, social movements, health and vulnerability, emerging knowledge, twenty-first century urbanization. The curriculum consists of research courses plus a colloquium. The former focus on the core topics of the program and integrate doctoral candidates into ongoing research in the field. In the first two semesters, an optional methodology course and/or special classes may be taken, while in the later semesters, doctoral candidates are required to teach one class, participate in the organization of an international conference or a panel and publish at least one paper.
