Berlin Mathematical School
The Berlin Mathematical School is the graduate school of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+ (www.mathplus.de) and a joint endeavor of the mathematics departments at the universities in Berlin: Freie Universität (FU), Humboldt-Universität (HU) and Technische Universität (TU). We offer an excellent doctoral program taught in English in a broad and active research environment together with mentoring programs, language courses, soft-skills seminars, funding for summer schools and conferences, a buddy program and funding for students with children. Committed to equality and diversity.
Focus
“Mathematics as a whole“ is a leading principle of the BMS. Its focus encompasses fields that are traditionally termed “pure“ or “applied“ mathematics, though we prefer not to make that distinction. Instead, research topics are grouped into eight parts, each covering a broad, but coherent, part of mathematics:
- Geometry and topology (Differential geometry, algebraic topology, and mathematical physics)
- Algebraic geometry and number theory (Algebraic geometry, arithmetic geometry, and number theory)
- Stochastics and mathematical finance (Probability, statistics and stochastic analysis)
- Discrete mathematics and optimization (Combinatorics, graph theory, discrete optimization and algorithms, complexity)
- Discrete geometry (Discrete geometry, discrete differential geometry and visualization)
- Numerical mathematics (Numerical analysis, continuous optimization and scientific computing)
- Applied analysis (Modelling, analysis and optimization with differential equations
- Mathematics for AI (Mathematics of data science and AI)
For applicants with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, Phase I offers a basic graduate phase of 3-4 semesters completed with a Master’s degree. Phase II is the research phase. It lasts 3-4 years in which candidates conduct specialized research and can attend advanced courses and conferences.
Deadlines:
The BMS application period consists of two rounds:
- First round deadline: December 1st
- Second round deadline: April 1st
Phase I applicants who require a Phase I scholarship need to apply in the first round.
Phase II applicants can freely choose in which round to apply.
Any applicant can only apply once per application period for admission to the BMS.
