The International Research Training Group (IRTG) "Temporalities of Future" is a binational German-Mexican research and study program, located at the Institute for Latin American Studies of Freie Universität Berlin.

In cooperation with HU, UP, El Colegio de México, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social, the IRTG enables highly qualified young researchers to write their thesis in an international environment. The main languages of the IRTG are Spanish and English.

Focus

The IRTG aims at a new perspective on the study of temporalities of the future in social and cultural sciences. It wants to contribute to the growing field of research on temporalities of the future by realigning investigations towards a better understanding of global entanglements and the meaning of cultural heterogeneity, with Latin America standing as an example of both aspects. Focussing on the aspirations and anticipations of various actors who produce new temporalities of the future through constant interaction offers a new approach and adds a much-needed perspective on subaltern and non-Western agency with regard to the future. The close cooperation with Mexican partner institutions enables a combination of diverse perspectives and furthers joint empirical research and theoretical debate. The study program is tailored to the specific needs of the dovtoral candidate.

In addition to research-oriented seminars and close individual supervision, it offers a wide range of events such as lecture series, research method workshops and guest lectures. Doctoral candidates have access to supervisors from both countries and benefit from different regional academic networks. They spend an extended period studying at the Mexican partner institutions and researching in Mexico or in other parts of Latin America.
