The Hertie School’s Doctoral Program in Governance puts students at the cutting edge of social science knowledge in one of the most important and dynamic fields of inquiry. It brings together perspectives from economics, political science, law, and sociology, and nurtures excellence in qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The program addresses applicants who are interested in exploring modern governance in an interdisciplinary and international context.

Focus

The three-year doctoral program is closely associated with the Hertie School’s Research Clusters. The three clusters are Political Economy, European Global Governance, and Organization, Management and Leadership. PhD students are linked to one of the clusters and work together with faculty members in the respective area.

The program offers rigorous academic training in research design and familiarizes students with cutting-edge methods and concepts in the field of governance and public policy.

During the first year of the program students are prepared for their dissertation research by colloquia and courses in research design and methods, complemented by skills workshops ranging from research methods to professional development.
